The New Year brings us another opportunity and chance for change, new starts, and new beginnings. We’ve spent a lot of money on Christmas, and parties …….so now, we’re wondering how we will pay off our credit cards with tax season around the corner. With the New Year come the resolutions and, hopefully…solutions. It is good to set some goals for yourself, and your pets. Have you taken the opportunity of looking back to last year and evaluating your actions and activities…..what worked and what didn’t? We can learn from our past history which will help us to look into the future to see what is needed and wanted in our Life….and how we can correct some of the mistakes we made. What do you wish for you & your pets? Maybe you want good health, stable finances, mastery in a sport, or perhaps better communication with your spouse and family. What ever your goals and intentions are for 2004, write them down and put them by your bathroom mirror……..so you can see them when brushing your teeth before going to work, and before going to bed. Images instead of words could be even more powerful in concentrating your intention and prayers ……to get what you want, and what you need. My wife and I made a collage from cut outs from magazines that help us keep focused. What I would like to suggest to have for your goals and intentions for
this year regarding the health of your pets are the following: 1.) Emotionally through loving them, and having more patience 2.) Physically through more exercise, better food, supplements, training, and knowledge of first aid 3.) Spiritually by seeing God through their eyes 4.) Listen to my radio show on Saturdays via the Internet at www.kkcr.org / 9-10am Hawaii time = 11-noon Pacific Standard Time. The animals in your lives are Gifts from God. They bring joy, companionship love and light into your life. They come to heal us. Please give them the care they deserve, for they give back so much more. Drug companies have become great forces in shaping how medicine is prescribed, how research is done, and how doctors think. Marketing gimmicks, TV ads, and misinformation disguised as “science” has tainted many veterinarians’ view of how to practice medicine. The profit motive is the primary interest of drug and chemical companies, and therefore, staying healthy is bad for business. Fifty years ago the same drug companies were tramping through the jungles of South America and Africa looking for herbal medicines. They still are today, but because it is more convenient and less expensive to create drugs in a laboratory than to hunt, grow, harvest and process plants into medicine, drugs have been substituted for plant medicines. Drugs have become the panacea of our times….promising a cure for almost anything. We are constantly waiting for that “magic bullet”, the drug to cure all that ails us. In the 1960’s, cortisone was the cure for everything until 10 years later, people were coming down with serious side–effects. More than 90,000 people die of drug overdoses or reactions every year in the USA, yet herbal medicines have become the “bad guys”. Even the ephedra plant which has been labeled “dangerous” because of its inappropriate use (without the guidance of an experienced naturopathic doctor) has killed less than 160 people in the last 3 years. Meanwhile, Tylenol, which is the leading cause of liver failure in humans, killing thousands of people every year, sits on the shelves of drug stores, supermarkets, and “gas and go’s”. The politics of medicine is bankrupting our health, and bank accounts. Always question what you are told by your veterinarian, and believe half of what you read on the internet. Read and buy books written by veterinarians who are the new thinkers: members of the American Holistic Veterinary Association, the Veterinary Botanical Medical Association, the American Homeopathic Veterinary Association, and the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture. Conventional veterinary medicine is in a flux with Holistic and Natural medicine. Veterinary medicine is turning a corner and evolving beyond drugs, surgery, technology, and treating animals like little machines that need “fixing”. “Integrative medicine” will be here soon. Dr. Andrew Weil
has been a pioneer in human medicine, and the founders (of which I am
one) of the American Holistic Veterinary Association have been forging
ahead exploring the past to create a better future in medicine for animals.
Prevention before Intervention is the best way to go. We have a very full plate of information this issue. Please read a little at a time so you don’t get reader’s indigestion. Put some good music on in the background. If you have used Genesis/Resources supplements, you would have experienced excellent quality and ingredients…..formulated by me. I have made herbal-vitamin-mineral nutraceutical mixes for over 25 years, and have created some of the most useful formulas for veterinarians to incorporate into their practices….whether holistic or conventional. They are not only effective but are easy to use. and understand. I have researched scientific studies, traditional uses, and clinical trials for each single ingredient listed. Check out Genesis website for more information at www.genesispets.com. One of the keys to good skin is a healthy wholesome diet. Another key to healthy skin in a tropical or summer climate is keeping the fur free of parasites: fleas, ticks, molds, yeasts and harmful bacteria. It’s also important to stimulate the circulation to the skin, and nourish the hair follicles with topical agents. The process of bathing properly includes massaging the suds deep into the fur and skin. This not only insures proper cleaning and elimination of parasites, but improves the blood flow to the skin which enhances healing. The essential oils I use in my shampoos are effective in killing and controlling parasites. Nutrients such as aloe vera juice, glycerine, protein (usually from beer or gelatin), chamomile tea, noni juice, sesame seed and olive oils are often added to the shampoos I make to enhance healing. In “stinky” animals, antioxidants are necessary to add to
the shampoo such as rosemary, chlorophyll, vitamin C & E, zinc, and
beta-carotene to rid the body of biological wastes and by-products that
act as “food” for bacteria and yeast, which will also attract
fleas and parasites to the animal. Or, give Genesis/Resources
Ingredients:
12 oz of a mild commercial human shampoo like Neutragena and Baby Shampoo or use Dr.Bronner’s Liquid Castile soap (comes In non-scented, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint, any of these will do and are available at health food stores and some Drug stores.)
1. Mix lemon juice, Skin So Soft (or Olive oil), and Aloe Vera Juice together in a glass quart jar. 2. In a ceramic or glass tea cup blend the oils separately into the glycerine. Stir slowly for about 1 -2 minutes 3.) Blend all of this together, mix well, and store in a recycled shampoo bottle. Use this like you would any shampoo. Wet your pet’s coat, apply and massage well leaving on for 10 minutes for maximum effect, then rinse completely out of fur.
Why not just buy something from your vet or pet store? …because most of the pet shampoos on the market for pets contain harmful substances that may be toxic to your pets when used frequently. These toxins may absorb through your skin and cause you harm as well. Following my simple shampoo recipes will be rewarding for you and your pet because they contain safe & effective ingredients. They feel and smell good and will promote a healthy coat without over drying the skin. They are nutritious to hair follicles, and will help keep your pets clean and parasite free. I recommend bathing dogs once a week and cats every 2 weeks, although dogs with severe parasite problems may need bathing every 3-4 days. It should be noted that some people are sensitive to these types of oils and should wear gloves; although, most people should just rinse their hands well after shampooing their pet. Those few who are extremely sensitive to essential oils can use tobacco tea* as an alternative. Stay tuned for recipes in future newsletters. * To make “tobacco tea” : Buy one package of cheap roll tobacco such as TOPS, and soak it in 4oz of witch hazel for 3 days. Strain out the loose tobacco (put that into your compost) and add to the above recipe. MORE ON MERCURY: The Mercury problem is insidious, and destructive to our environment, our pets, and us. Unfortunately, the contamination of our Earth from mercury is increasing, and so is the absorption of this toxic metal into our nervous system and brain. Mercury is becoming a major health risk for your animals and YOU! We don’t want to hear more “bad news” about our health situation, but if we become unconscious to the situation like the Ancient Romans who had their drinking water pipes made from Lead……brain damage will become rampant and affect our society. Seems like we have enough crazy people in the world already! Eating Fish & Mercury This person became angry with me for telling her the truth……or rather more truths about the increasing problem mercury poisoning….and how it is becoming to cause illness in more and more people and animals. I said, “Don’t get Angry at me……for the bad news…. Being aware and conscious about the issues…may save your Life!” I told her to transform her Anger into power, for action, or solutions to the environmental problems that face our Civilization and challenge our survival.” The FDA is recommending that women who are pregnant not eat more than 7 oz of fish per week. Why? Because if the fish have mercury in the meat, this mercury will affect the nervous and brain tissue development. The Environment The “consumerating” and disposable minded society we live in perpetuates the myth that buying “things” will make us happy. The result is a lot of WASTE in the air, in our homes, and in our garbage dumps….and A LOT more POLLUTION in the World…. Some of this pollution comes down from the air…..100’s or 1,000’s of miles from the source… acids, gases turned liquid, and heavy metals are spread throughout the world and pollution our streams, rivers, lakes, and Oceans. That is why……no matter where your fish comes from……they will have some amount of MERCURY in them. Locally caught fish (in Hawaii) seems less contaminated than other places around the world. Fish caught near and around Kauai seem to have less pollution in their fish. But this may change if the Navy continues to expand their base at Barking Sands, and their missile programs. Fish from the Big Island may have more contaminants, due to volcanic toxins flowing into the ocean from the Kilauea volcano. After reading an article by John Moore, I was surprised to find out other sources of mercury that I had not considered. The Amalgam Connection Mercury vaporizes very easily i.e., turns from a metal into a gas, starting at 50 below zero Fahrenheit. Your mouth is about 98.9 degrees F. It is very conceivable his old and faulty amalgams were leaking mercury gases into his brain…….through the blood stream and from inhaling vapors when getting dental work. ( When you remove amalgams and replace them with composite fillings, a lot of mercury is leaked into your body at the time) You may want to consider having a dentist (who is holistically oriented) check your fillings and perhaps replace them with coral or other non-mercury fillings. These may create more dentistry bills for you, but I had all my fillings replaced over a 2 year period, and I feel a lot better myself. But what about all the mercury that has leaked into your body from removing the amalgams? Well a Japanese researcher, Dr. Omura, has discovered that cilantro, Chinese parsley, is great for removing mercury from your heart, lungs, and liver. To accomplish this detox you have to eat 1 cup of cilantro three times a day for 2 weeks after your dental appointment. Other Sources of MERCURY I. Vaccines….that use thimersole as a preservative. There are many people as well as physicians and naturopathic doctors who are linking this mercury to Autism in children…..which is increasing every year with no other explanation from the conventional medical community. Ask your doctor for a vaccine FREE OF thimersole for you , your kids, and your pets! II. Plastics / mercury is used as a preservative to improve longevity
of the material.
III. Coal fire and fossil fuel power plants (we have one on Kauai) seep mercury into our air. From the air, the mercury falls in rain showers contaminating our rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. IV. Fungicides. Farmers use fungicides that contain mercury compounds so your wines, and grapes, citrus and vegetables MAY contain mercury. V. Florescent Light Bulbs What to do...

in 30 or 50 HEART HEALTH: BE PROACTIVE OR WAIT TILL SOMETHING HAPPENS? Part III: How Herbs & Nutraceuticals can help to treat and prevent heart disease in animals. Most veterinarians as well as human physicians have a wait and see attitude about heart disease. Unless there are symptoms such as coughing, this wait and see plan is all you will get from your conventional veterinarian. Before we can tell you what and how to use herbs and nutraceuticals for
your pet’s heart health, we must first explain how they work. Some
veterinarians will say that everything your pet needs is in commercial
canned or dry food. But this is not totally true. VITAMINS Let’s begin the discussion with the essential vitamins for Heart
Health. One study showed that a combination of vitamins A, E, C and beta-carotene
given within a few hours of symptoms of an acute myocardial infarction
could be associated with a significant reduction in total cardiac end
points including total cardiac death and nonfatal acute myocardial infarction.
Besides vitamin C's direct affect at quenching reactive-damaging free
radicals, it has been shown to regenerate reduced tocopherol (tocopheroxyl
radical) which provides high levels of vitamin E in the tissues. If an animal is obese, “out of shape”, a “couch potato”, does not regularly exercise, or has “parents” with a history of heart disease; supplementing with Vit C and E is the least one should do to help decrease stress on the heart. If your dog is a hunting dog, or is very active with running or racing, these animals could benefit from Vitamins to prevent breakdown of heart cells during strenuous exercise. In human medicine, much research is being directed at investigating vitamins B1 & B 6 for lowering cholesterol, plaque formation in the coronary arteries, and lowering blood pressure. Although most dogs do not have this problem, some of their owners do. THE AMINO ACIDS: L- CARNITINE & TAURINE L-carnitine will improve heart function directly by supporting the transport of long chain fatty acids to beta-oxidation sites within the mitochondria. The Mitochondria is the “battery” of the cell, and L-carnitine is needed to “charge it” back up to normal, by providing the biochemicals necessary for cell health. Some canine dilated cardio-myopathies due to unknown causes may have direct correlation to deficiencies of taurine and L- carnitine. Certain breeds are more susceptible to developing this disease than others. Research on families of boxers with dilated cardiomyopathy discovered
that all dogs had decreased concentrations of myocardial L-carnitine when
compared to control groups. Supplementing the diet with L-carnitine improved
cardiac function, heart rate, and exercise tolerance, and decreased cardiac
necrosis and will benefit dogs (and cats) with cardiomyopathy and congestive
heart failure…improving survivability. When these improved dogs
were deprived of L-carnitine, cardiac dysfunction returned. Tissue and
cellular damages that occur in cardiomyopathy are characteristic of oxidative
stress. Taurine is a non-protein amino acid obtained through the diet as a free amino acid. Taurine is absent from the vegan diet. It is formed in the body as an end product of the decarboxylation of cysteine and hypotaurine. Taurine has antioxidant properties, lowers blood pressure, reduces blood cholesterol levels and reduces platelet aggregation. As an antioxidant, it functions by decreasing the levels of lipid peroxides which cause free radical damage to the myocardium A lack of taurine in the diet will create cardiomyopathy in cats and dogs, especially in the Doberman pincher, Portuguese water dog, American cocker spaniel, and Irish wolfhound. It is extremely important in maintaining heart health. Cardiomyopathy has become a common occurrence because most commercially based diets are deficient in taurine. Taurine deficiency is associated with feline central retinal degeneration, reproductive failure, developmental abnormalities, dilated cardiomyopathy and compromised immune function. Naturally occurring sources of taurine include animal products, especially fish. It should be noted that cats fed a commercially canned diet have a requirement for taurine that is almost twice as high as those fed a commercially dry diet. Why? Dry food has a lot of fillers, especially corn and soy, and is thus cheaper to product. Feline diets should contain at least 1,000-1,200 mg taurine per kg of diet, and canned commercial diets should contain at least 2,000 to 2,500 mg per kg diet on a dry matter basis. Normally present in heart muscle, taurine can be supplemented by either feeding dogs & cats a diet of cooked or raw beef heart daily, or giving a pure amino acid product. Supplementation could eliminate occurrence, and decrease pathological changes in animals already with nutritionally related heart disease. The survival rates of any dog or cat with cardiomyopathy or congestive heart failure will greatly improve with the supplementation of a combination of L-carnitine and taurine. The current National Research Council recommendation for adequate taurine in cats' diets is 400 mg per kg in dry food; to prevent dilated cardiomyopathy, dry cat food must supply 1,000 mg/kg of taurine in the diet, which is a two to threefold increase over the National Resource Council requirements. Taurine levels below 20 nmol/ml are a risk factor for cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration. Oral replacement of taurine should be 250 mgs, given twice a day. The following is a list of FOOD choices that you can integrate into your dog or cats diet to prevent disease and maintain healthy hearts in your pets: SUPPLEMENT FOOD SOURCE
The easiest way to administer all these supplements……….(too many pills!) is to give your dogs with cardiac problems CARDIAC SUPPORT by Genesis/Resources. It consists of amino acids, minerals. Herbs, and vitamins to help your dog’s heart condition improve by providing the necessary nutrients to support healing. CARDIAC SUPPORT can be safely used with any cardiac medication your veterinarian may prescribe. Please inform your veterinarian that you are using this supplement and if he or she has any questions they can E-mail me personally, or call me at: 808-822-4229 I want to conclude this article with these thoughts:
